Structured Reading Strategies for Students of Diverse Linguistic Backgrounds (Audience: K-12th Grades)

Sign up or log in to save this to your schedule, view media, leave feedback and see who's attending!

Within a scaffolded and safe instructional environment, everyone - including newcomer, beginning, and intermediate Emergent Bilingual students - can participate equitably in structured academic reading activities. Through interactive exchanges, students deepen their content knowledge and experience opportunities to practice critical vocabulary. Additionally, these practices strengthen relationships among classmates who might not otherwise have an opportunity to learn from one another. Through implementation of a few simple strategies and practices, it is possible to increase student engagement and retention of information while building both their confidence in themselves as readers as well as their empathy for other humans.
